P0420, P0171, P0128, P0300, P0442… the OBD2 trouble codes most often read on Canadian vehicles, their likely cause and what to check first.
Canada's climate leaves its mark on diagnostic trouble codes. Repeated cold starts, road salt, winter-blend fuel and long idling periods make certain Check Engine codes far more common here. These are the ones we see most often with Canadian automotive professionals and DIY repairers using the ChatMecano OBD2 connector.
P0420 – Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1). The all-time champion. Often caused by an aging oxygen sensor or a small exhaust leak upstream, not necessarily a dead catalytic converter. Check both O2 sensors and exhaust sealing before replacing an expensive part.P0171 – System too lean (Bank 1). Vacuum leak after the MAF, intake gasket hardened by cold, cracked PCV valve or dirty injectors.P0128 – Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature. A Canadian classic: thermostat stuck open. The engine never reaches temperature, fuel use climbs and cabin heat stays lukewarm.P0300 / P0301–P0306 – Engine misfires. Worn spark plugs, ignition coils tired from moisture, or poor winter fuel.P0442 / P0455 – EVAP system leak. Very often a loose gas cap or a seal hardened by the cold.P0011 – Camshaft timing over-advanced. Oil too thick, overdue oil change, or a clogged VVT solenoid.P0135 – O2 sensor heater circuit. Common on vehicles exposed to salt and humidity.
