P0420, P0171, P0128, P0300, P0442… the OBD2 trouble codes most often pulled on Canadian vehicles, their likely cause and what to check first.
Canada's climate leaves its mark on diagnostic trouble codes. Repeated cold starts, road salt, winter-blend fuel and long idle times make certain Check Engine codes far more common up north. These are the DTCs we see most often with Canadian technicians and DIY repairers running the ChatMecano OBD2 connector.
P0420 – Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1). The all-time leader. Often an aging O2 sensor or a small upstream exhaust leak, not necessarily a failed converter.P0171 – System too lean (Bank 1). Vacuum leak after the MAF, intake gasket hardened by cold, cracked PCV valve or dirty injectors.P0128 – Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature. A cold-climate classic: thermostat stuck open.P0300 / P0301–P0306 – Misfires. Worn plugs, moisture-tired coils, or poor winter fuel.P0442 / P0455 – EVAP leak. Usually a loose gas cap or a cold-hardened seal.P0011 – Camshaft position timing over-advanced. Oil too thick, overdue service, clogged VVT solenoid.P0135 – O2 sensor heater circuit. Common on salt-exposed vehicles.
